Today, Biovancia warns consumers of the decreasing nutritional value of foods consumed in the US. Biovancia goes on to offer potential solutions to the issue.
NEW YORK, Aug. 18, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Biovancia, creator of Neo-Collagen and Artimium 360, warns consumers of the diminishing nutritional value of food consumed in the United States (as reported in "Still No Free Lunch: Nutrient levels in U.S. food supply eroded by pursuit of high yields," by Brian Halweil). Biovancia goes on to offer potential solutions to the problem faced by consumers.
Today (8/18/22), in the Medium article "What is the nutritional quality of the food we eat?", Biovancia shares information from "Still No Free Lunch: Nutrient levels in U.S. food supply eroded by pursuit of high yields," by Brian Halweil and addresses potential solutions to the problem. Biovancia commented, "Halweil said that in recent decades, developed countries have significantly changed their diet, preferring processed products with a content of salt, sugar and bad fats that are far too high. Another alarming finding from Halweil: caloric intake has increased, while the nutritional value of unprocessed foods has drastically decreased. Emerging from numerous studies conducted from 1997 to the present day...It appears that in 50 years (between 1950 and 1999), more than 40 fruits and vegetables have lost up to 20% of their vitamin C content, 15% of their iron content, 16% of their calcium levels, and 6% of their protein value. But what can we do to get enough of the right nutrients our bodies need? After reading Halweil's research, we believe that consumers might be able to combat these deficiencies by choosing organic, non-GMO, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. In addition, consumers may also consult their doctors to gauge if they are deficient in any vitamins or minerals. If so, consumers can seek their doctor's expert opinion on the supplements that might help them."
Biovancia's warning comes in light of information revealed in the paper "Still No Free Lunch: Nutrient levels in U.S. food supply eroded by pursuit of high yields," by Brian Halweil (published by The Organic Center - September 2007). Halweil shared that government data from the UK and US both show a decline in essential nutrients over the last few decades. The researcher wrote that nutrients?including zinc, iron, calcium, and selenium?have diminished by double digits percentages in common foods and people today would need to consume 21 oranges to obtain the same nutritional value found in a single orange 50 years ago. Halweil warned, "Mineral deficiencies affect billions of poor populations around the world with conditions like iron deficiency related anemia, vitamin A-related blindness, and selenium deficiency related cancers. Even in well-fed wealthy nations, government surveys find that people do not consume sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals for optimal health. Some nutritionists and crop scientists have suggested that taking mineral supplements or fortifying staple foods with additional nutrients is sufficient to compensate for a diet that is low in major nutrients. Clearly, supplements and fortification have a role to play in improving public health."
